With just 100 days to go before we release Creo 1.0, it’s time to talk facts. Facts and apps. So we’re launching a new series of articles that detail just what you can expect in the mid-June release. Our Just the Apps series (name inspired by our favourite no-nonsense cop show), will cover the apps, the technologies, and the roles we’ll support for our first Creo release.

Let’s start now, with the Creo 1.0 role-based apps.

Expect nine functional, role-based apps—all part of Creo’s AnyRole Apps breakthrough technology delivering the right tool, to the right people, at the right time. Look for these apps in our June 2011 release (note: the names aren’t final product names, as soon as they’re finalized, we’ll share them):

  • Parametric modeling—all the capabilities currently available in Pro/ENGINEER (or Creo Elements/Pro, if you’ve been paying attention).
  • Direct modeling—the basic features you need for direct interaction with geometry, whether working with an existing design or creating a new one.
  • Schematics—for creating 2D routed systems diagrams for piping and cabling designs.
  • Mechanical Visualization—for viewing, interrogating, and marking up MCAD geometry.
  • Electronic Visualization—for viewing, interrogating, and marking up ECAD geometry.
  • 3D technical illustrations—providing the tools you need to communicate complex service information concepts graphically in 3D.
  • Conceptual engineering—for a fresh approach to addressing the challenges of early concept layout work in 2D, but ultimately driving a 3D design.
  • Structural simulation—all the capabilities an analyst needs for structural and thermal simulation.
  • Freehand sketching – all the capabilities to quickly capture a design idea in 2D.

Some apps will include extensions; for example, the parametric modeling app includes many of the extensions available in Creo Elements/Pro, plus some new ones. All the Creo apps will run on the same core platforms, Microsoft Windows 7 and XP. Selected apps may run on additional platforms in later releases too—but not Creo 1.0.

Watch for the next Creo 1.0 ‘Just the Apps’ article, roughly every 10 days. We’ll take a closer look at two of the Creo breakthrough technologies – Creo AnyData Adoption and Creo AnyBOM Assembly.

Meanwhile, if you have any initial questions about any of these apps, use the comments below. We use your questions to guide our future articles. And as always, we’ll answer directly in the comments section whenever possible.

And even thought the release is now just 100 days away! Future plans are subject to change at PTC’s discretion.
